Ahoy Matey! Talk Like a Pirate TODAY for a FREE Krispie Kreme!

ARGH. This post is for my most adventurous friends. Today is “Talk like a Pirate Day” at Krispie Kreme. It’s the 10th anniversary of this special day, sop don’t forget your eyepatch. I have a parrot, maybe he should come to the donut store this year. Why just talk like a pirate, when you can dress as one too? The Fun Corner in San Bernardino has every kind of costume imaginable. Stripped shirt, eye patch, large gold hoop earring, wooden leg, black boots, parrot. Yep. That would just about do it. At this point, you will feel very pirate, to break into your character voice for a FREE Krispie Kreme. Pirate speak: Ahoy Mate Argh Shiver me timbers! Dar she blows! Landlubbers should try to avoid Davey Jone’s locker. Krispie Kreme wants all...

Let’s Lick Leukemia/Lymphoma over Brunch

Are you free on Saturday anytime between 10 – 2 and like to eat great food? Then I have a fabulous cause for you to support. There is a fundraiser for leukemia and lymphoma at a local Redlands eatery. Wild Rocket in Redlands is donating their net proceeds to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphocytes, which is part of the immune system. This breakfast fundraiser is in honor of Chris, who was the Memorial Honoree in 2011 for the Light the Night Walk. The funds go toward life saving research and support for people battling this cancer. Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. They also have a team that participates in the Light the Night Walk for the LLS. It’s not an official organization (yet), but under the team name, they hold...

Organic vs. Non-organic food

Researchers at Stanford University have recently reviewed over 200 studies on the benefits of organic versus non-organic food. They have determined the nutritional content of both types of food are about the same. Organic milk and chicken may contain more omega-3 fatty acids, they found – but that was based on only a few studies. More than one-third of conventional produce had detectable pesticide residues, compared to seven percent of the organic produce samples. Organic chicken and pork was 33% less likely to carry bacteria resistant to three or more antibiotics than conventionally-produced meat. I don’t think these results are too surprising. I’ve never believed organic food nutrients were different. I eat organic (when possible) because of the...

Is the drought the cause of higher food & fuel prices?

A Corn Crisis! I visited Kansas City, Missouri last week for a national conference. While the plane landed and again when Super Shuttle brought me to my destination, I noticed multiple fields of dead corn stalks. It was much cooler in MO, than when I left southern California, but obviously they were having problems too. I knew we had an unseasonably hot summer across the states, but I had no idea how bad it had become. Over the past year, I’ve noticed the price of corn has been increasing, because I regularly purchase a corn, oats, barley (COB) mixture as a top coat for my horses. I’ve also noticed hay has increased quite a bit too. A year ago, All Pet Feed Store had an article on the wall about the increase in corn prices, indicating a relationship...

Counting calories? There’s a fun app for that: Meal Snap! Once launched, you take a picture of your meal and it tells you the approximate calories you are about to consume. I find it especially useful when I dine out. Enjoy the magic of technology.
