Behind the Scenes: Creating a HUGE Headdress

There is allot of work, engineering and creativity that happens prior to my wearing a headdress for the ALSB Headdress Ball. These headdresses are much heavier than the ones used in Vegas. Like 20-30 pounds heavier. So, a VERY TIGHT cinch is needed, to keep the headdress in place. A 3 foot bar is positioned in the back of the cinch, near the small of my back. FIrst the bar is placed in the cinch and measured to my height. Then it is bent to match my body type. After some welding, pounding and bending, the bar is placed back in my cinch. A sturdy helmet is then positioned on top of the bar, and the headdress is built out from there. What is important to note, is the helmet does not touch my ears, forehead or rest on my head. The cinch and weight take all the...

Did somebody spike my coffee?!?!

This morning I am deliriously happy. No reason. Everything is pretty much the same. Nobody has announced a pregnancy (besides Wills & Kate), had a baby, got engaged or married. There has not been any major event to bring it on; I didn’t win the lottery (was I supposed to buy tickets??), my next paper is being finalized but not finished, I was not blessed with a new client last night, I didn’t run this morning – in fact, yesterdays run was sluggish and I haven’t even started learning my dance routine for the 4/20 headdress ball BTW: Please like their Facebook page while you are here. Because I have no reason to be THIS DARN HAPPY, I thought I better pass it along. You all deserve to have this feeling. A feeling of freedom, lightness and wanting to go play. I...

Hats Off To The Community

Saturday and Saturday night played like a good dream. It was fun, full of friends, laughter and I always enjoy being part of a show. The show theme was “Hats Off to the Community” and featured 8 local philanthropic organizations (including ours) with a dancing model wearing a large ornate headdress and backup dancers to a fun song. The Headdress Ball raises funds for dental care and clothing for underprivileged children. Assistance League of SB screens every 1st grade child in the city of San Bernardino. When I assisted last Thursday, we saw 112 first grade students. Unfortunately about 20 were listed in the dental emergency category, 8 had abcesses and 2 had swollen faces. As you can tell, Assistance League is very needed in this community. I was...
