Using Social Media as a Health Educator

I was honored to present social media information to those in the tobacco control field at the 2012 National Conference on Tobacco Or Health (NCTOH). I spoke to over 100 people about how to use Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google + in their work. I spoke to university professors, clinicians, researchers, high school teachers, youth advocates, the CDC, tobacco treatment specialists, activists, scientists, marketing folks, and vendors. I brought 50 posters with me, and was surprised when I ran out of them. If you did not get one, I am happy to forward a copy to you, please email me at marnett@llu.edu for an electronic copy. Depending on their goals, I recommended different applications. Using more than one is great, but my messages to newbies was the same...

Facebook Security

There seems to have been an increase in spam and ‘chain letter’ type of things going around Facebook lately. “Please tell your friends to watch their walls, hackers are getting into accounts and posting porn or writing on your wall. My sources say there has been no recent rise in this activity. Just a chain letter. But, If you click the links to sex videos, expect to be hacked. I’ve seen ‘Facebook‘ will start charging for about a year. – There will be some optional pricing coming out soon for page owners, businesses, or profiles with something to showcase. ‘Your account is being shut off‘ emails are a phishing attempt. Each time Facebook changed their privacy settings, the chatter in social media was intense and people were bothered there wasn’t an announcement to warn users. So, I was pleased to learn 2 U.S. senators are asking Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate if employers who ask for Facebook passwords during job interviews are violating federal law. I was shocked to learn some employers and Universities have asked applicants to share their password, to peruse their personal page. Universities and potential employers would argue this quick look at an applicant gives them a better tool to assess and choose wisely. Applicants can always change their password after the interview. But, personal information such as gender, race, religion and age are often...

Fabulous, Fun, Florida

My short visit to Florida reminded me of southern California. Hot & sunny. I’m used to that & like it. I didn’t get to visit Disneyworld (I did eat at downtown Disney), but was thrilled for a visit to Gatorland. I especially enjoyed ziplining over the gator enclosures. I also recommend putting this unique attraction on your ‘ToDo’ list. I will remember the people I met that lived and worked in Orlando and attended the American Dental Education Association for a very long time. They made this a fabulous trip, because they were kind and considerate. They reminded me of my #UsGuys friend @StephenCaggiano – who moved to MN, from Orlando … Right before my trip. HUGE bummer. I was hoping for a Tweetup when I first planned...
