April, or I as refer to it: National child abuse prevention and awareness month – has come to an end.
It would be nice if every day was child abuse prevention and awareness day. The last child abuse awareness event I participated in this month was the CASA 3K/5K run walk in San Bernardino. CASA of San Bernardinois a non-profit organization that recruits and trains volunteers to be Court Appointed Special Advocates for foster youth. Volunteers commit spend 10 – 15 hours a month with their youth for a minimum of 18 months. The CASA volunteers provide improve their quality of life and provide stability and hope to abused and neglected children. About 300 people participated in the event, showingtheir support for CASA. Various vendors also attended the event and In-and-Out Burger generously provided lunch for 200.
We started at 10AM, on a very warm spring day. Fortunately the streets are tree-lined in downtown San Bernardino and provided some relief from the sun. I had not been running daily and it was harder than I expected, but I was excited to be the third female to finish the 5K! Admittedly, I tried my best to be the second but could not catch the lady in front of me. After the run, there was a lunch provided by In-N-Out Burger, musical performances from local youth, home baked goodies, booths of community businesses and organizations – including 10 adorabe puppies up for adoption through the county animal shelter. Attending children we thrilled to hang out with Bernie, the Inland Empire 66rs mascot.
You can support CASA in three other ways. You can like their Facebook page , Be trained as a CASA a volunteer, AND/or attend the Munchin at the Mansion – the fall fundraiser. Munchin at the Mansion is an annual event held at the Edwards mansion, where numerous restaurants are serving up their finest.
If not you, then who?
If not now, then when?
